The Russian Defence Ministry announced on Sunday that it successfully launched a Bulava Intercontinental Ballistic Missile from its Navy’s newest nuclear powered submarine, the Imperator Alexander III from the White Sea.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law withdrawing Russia’s ratification of the global treaty that bans nuclear weapons tests. The missile launched on Sunday is reported to carry up to six warheads and can be launched from underwater.

The Russian Defence Ministry said the missile hit a target thousands of kilometres in the far east Russian peninsula of Kamchatka.

The Imperator Alexander III is one of Russia’s new Borei-class nuclear submarines that carry 16 Bulava missiles each and are more manoeuvrable and quieter than previous models. The missiles themselves are 12metres in length and have a range of approximately 5000miles (8000km).

The new submarine is intended to be the core naval component of the nation’s nuclear forces, the Russian navy currently has three Borei-Class submarines in service, one more is finishing tests and three others are under construction, according to the Russian Defence Ministry.
