As paranoia spreads through the Kremlin, its suspected that Russia has resurrected their WW2 spy catching unit ‘Smersh’ according to Ministry of Defence.

This move moves us even closer to another ‘Cold War’

Most people, particularly Bond fans will know ‘Smersh’ for its inclusion in Ian Flemings ‘James Bond’ books and best remembered in the Sean Connery 1963 Bond film FromRussia With Love, but what many might not realise is that Smersh is a real life unit set up by Stalin in 1941 during WW2 to catch spies and also worked to counter Anti-Stalin elements within the Soviet Union at the time.

The MOD said in a recent statement in its latest intelligence update “In late 2023, Russian politicians claimed that the Soviet counter-intelligence (CI) organisation ‘Smersh’ was being re-established,”

Smersh “An abbreviation of the Russian phrase for ‘death to spies’, Joseph Stalin established the original organisation which existed from 1941-1946”.

“In early January 2024, an open-source image showed operatives apparently wearing Smersh uniform patches.

It is unclear if the organisation has officially been revived or is merely a rebadging of an existing unit.

The MOD also commented that the presence of Smersh was another example of how Russian officials “‘consciously couch the Russia-Ukraine conflict in the spirit of the Second World War”.
