Jon Rambeau, President of L3Harris Integrated Mission Systems, led a media roundtable defence discussion at this years RIAT (Royal International Air Tattoo) covering the UK’s Strategic Defence Review outlines steps for making Britain safer at home and abroad.

At the same time, Europe is pursuing a new era of defence with the ReArm Europe Plan to advance its military ecosystem and develop a long-term strategy for a safer and more secure future.
L3Harris Technologies has received a $300million contract from Italy to deliver two Gulfstream G550 aircraft provisioned for a modern elecro-magnetic warfare system. L3Harris partnered with BAE Systems on this solution, which represents the first time the US Government has approved an EA-37B sale to an international ally.
The modified G550 with electro-magnetic attack capabilities will provide the Italian Air Force with an airborne jamming capability with range, altitude and endurance to disrupt enemy command and control communications, radar and navigation systems from an extended distance.

“We are expanding our support of Italy’s armed forces by equipping them with the modern mission technology ready for managing a dynamic global landscape,” said Jason Lamert, President, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, L3Harris. He went on to say: “Our team will provide Italy with solutions to augment its national security and increase its interoperability with the US and strategic allies”.
Once complete, the aircraft will join the Italian Ministry of Defence’s fleet of Special Mission Aircraft, along with the Joint Airborne Multi-Mission Multi-Sensor System (JAMMS) effort to advance the country’s airborne capabilities. L3Harris is currently modifying two Gulf Stream G550 ISR aircraft under JAMMS.
The JAMMS effort is another L3Harris growing portfolio of multi-mission aircraft solutions hosted on a variety of commercial platforms, which support critical global security missions for the US, Australia, Canada, Japan, Republic of Korea and other allies.
L3Harris, who are the 6th largest defence contractor in the US has integrated aircraft for more than 70years, and has missionised aircraft from more than 10 original equipment manufacturers, consisting of over 125 aircraft types, with more than 15,000 deliveries, fielding 103 missionised business jet aircraft to date.
L3Harris is creating and delivering solutions today to support the UK & European effort, including:

- Adapting UK’s premier airborne ISR fleet: The RC-135 Rivet Joint reconnaissance aircraft serves as the eyes and ears of U.K, U.S. and allied forces. L3Harris is continuously adapting the fleet to provide near real-time on-scene intelligence collection, analysis and dissemination capabilities for competition, crisis and conflict phases of operations.
- Air special missions: Instead of building new platforms from the ground up with the time and budget that requires, nations can build on commercial platforms and quickly militarise them. L3Harris will announce a new contract for Italy’s Electronic Attack (EA) aircraft program. Italy’s EA and Joint Airborne Multi-mission, Multi-sensor System (JAMMS) programs have the Gulfstream G550 as the foundation with mission systems added by L3Harris.
- Counter-UAS missions: Unmanned Autonomous Systems (UAS) are a deeply concerning threat given their swift rate of advancement and mass production levels. Additionally, militaries cannot afford to expend multi-million-dollar missiles against these smaller, low-cost drones. L3Harris’ VAMPIRE is a self-contained system that provides precision strike capability to greatly reduce costs.

- Autonomous missions: The fundamental challenge for autonomous mission operations is achieving autonomy at scale. To command-and-control hundreds or thousands of autonomous assets in a contested environment requires more than human oversight. AMORPHOUS is our open architecture system that creates collaborative autonomy across domains. It controls a handful of uncrewed assets, as well as operates small fleets, and even much larger system-of-systems of intelligent autonomous swarms.
